Times Magazine names Samia among top 100 influential people

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been named among the 100 most influential people of 2022 by Time magazine on Monday in the category of political leaders.

According to the Magazine President Samia has been a tonic and has made a big difference to Tanzania since she took office in March 2021.

“A door has opened for dialogue between political rivals, steps have been taken to rebuild trust in the democratic system, efforts have been made to increase press freedom, and women and girls have a new role model,” writes TIME.

They write, In September 2021, just a few months into her presidency, President Samia  delivered a landmark speech as only the fifth African woman leader ever to address the U.N. General Assembly.

“She stood on the spot where one stood 15 years before as the first democratically elected woman President in Africa”.

The list comes at the right time as President Samia is also scheduled to receive the Africa Road Builders–Babacar Ndiaye Trophy 2022 in recognition of her commitment in development of transport infrastructure.

The trophy, which was won by the President of Nigeria, Mr Muhammadu Buhari, last year, will be awarded to President Samia at the final conference of the Africa Road Builders, which is scheduled to take place alongside the African Development Bank (AfDB)’s annual meeting in Accra, Ghana.

Apart from the Tanzania leader, The TIME100 Most Influential list includes Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Others are  US President Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, tennis icon Rafael Nadal, Apple CEO Tim Cook and media mogul Oprah Winfrey.

The TIME100 list is divided into six categories – Icons, Pioneers, Titans, Artists, Leaders and Innovators. But in the words of the Editor-in-Chief and CEO of TIME, Edward Felsenthal, it is prepared on one simple barometer and that is 'influence'.
